Cambrils and his environment

Cambrils has very long tradition in tourist reception; the number of tourists is dramatically increased in the last decades of the past century.

All activities concerning the touristic world are coordinate by Turisme de Cambrils  (Cambrils Tourism Board); in summer the city has a lot of popular feast (Sant Pere, la Mare de Déu del Carme, la Mare de Déu del Camí), all of them full of attractive events like fireworks, popular dancing, fisher ships processions, giants and bigheads cavalcade, the Nit del Foc -a fire and fireworks apotheosis-, etc.

There is something curious and this is that there are much families, from decades ago spending his holidays in Cambrils, but they know anything more that beaches and harbour; of course beach and harbour are the great attractions of Cambrils, but not the only ones.

Due to its privileged situation, Cambrils is been inhabited from the prehistory, and there are many vestiges you can visit and see.

There is the Museu d’Història de Cambrils and the Museu Agrícola de Cambrils  too. At more, in all the old city there are interesting houses and you can see too the remains of the old wall, specially the Carrer Major (Main Street) entrance.

Without leaving the Cambrils municipality, there is the Parc Samà, a great and monumental garden in romanthic style built under the direction of the Architect Josep Fonseré, having as assistant a young Antoni Gaudí.

Cambrils has a great sports activity, and there are frequently competitions of rowing regattassailing regattas, half marathon, triathlonbeach voley, etc. and there is an increasing sportive level and too a great number of participants.

The Region

Cambrils is in the Baix Camp region; in the same region and in the neighbours there are many interesting places, usually at very short distances, and these can help you in having a much fun and pleasent holidays here:

-Reus, is one of most important modernism cities.

-Prades, also known as the "Vila Vermella" (the Red Village) due to houses builts with the characteristic red sandstone; its one of inhabitated centers in highest level of the region, this produces a dramatically different climate to the one existing in the villages on the lowest lands and specially with the ones at the sea side.

-The castle of Escornalbou. That's a sately mansion built joining an ancient castle and an ancient monastery. It's on the top of a mountain (649 mts.) visible from anywhere in the shore plain of the Baix Camp. There are very spectacular views.

-Dam in Riudecanyes. Just in the base of the mountain of Escornalbou, there is the Dam in Riudecanyes; this has been built in the first years of the XXth century by private initiative; even today it belongs to the irrigator's community; it is not a very big dam but in its shores there are many trees, pines, eucalyptus, etc. and with many picnic areas too.

The neighboring Regions

-Tarragona has been declarated few years ago, as World Heritage site; the city had been the capital of the Tarraconense Roman province. The city is full of vestiges and monuments of the Roman period, and you can have a very pleasant visit there.

-Delta de l’Ebre, Going to the South (70 Kmts.) we found this area; this is something completely different of usually we have seen: endless plains changing along the year depending of the cycles of cultivation of rice, and you can see them flooded, luxurious green, fantastic yellow, etc.; there is too a great variety of wildlife, specially ornithological fully spectacular.

-Els Ports; very few kilometers far of the Delta there are the mountains of els Ports de Tortosa-Beseit, these mountains are the East end of the Iberian massif and there is the Mont Caro, the highest mountain in the Tarragona province; these mountains are in limestone, and this is a very savage area where you can see too a very caractheristic wildlife: savage goats, musk cats, badgers....

-El Priorat; the region where someones of the most famous (and most expensive) wines in the world are produced, is near Cambrils too. A short car's promenade by a very stunning roads will translate you there; you must see the carthusian monastery of Scala Dei situated close to the Montsant mountains range, (the name "Priorat" means that all these lands some centurys ago belonged to the monastery under the authority of the Prior); we can see too, many small charming villages with many wine-cellars where those wonderful wines are produced. An special attention can be accorded to Siurana, a very small village hanged on a imposig cliff. This area is known as one of best in the world for the sportive climbing.

-La Ruta del Cister; this route joins three Cistercian Monasterys situated on trhee neighboring regions at about 50 Kmts. far from Cambrils; the three monasterys are: Poblet (Conca de Barberà), Santes Creus (Alt Camp) and Vallbona de les Monges (Urgell):

-The Poblet monastery, is in the Conca de Barberà and at a very short distance of the capital Mont-Blanc. It's an awesome architectonic ensemble, close to the Prades mountains and it's the greatest inhabitet monastery in Europe.

-Santes Creus; is another cistercian monastery; this one is now without monastic life, and it is one of the jewels of the medieval catalan art.

-Vallbona de les Monges is a feminine monastery with nuns always living her monastic life there.
